Mathieu van der Poel set a record on the Poggio di Sanremo during the 2021 Milan-San Remo race, completing the 3.7km climb in 5 minutes and 38 seconds - eight full seconds faster than the previous record set by Giorgia Furlan in 1994. Van der Poel was part of a breakaway group of four riders who all beat Furlan's record time, with Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers), Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), and Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) just two seconds back. Van der Poel's performance was impressive, averaging 39.18 kph on the climb with an estimated average power output of 564 watts. He also set the second fastest overall speed on record, with an average speed of 45.773 kph, with Gianni Bugno's 1990 time remaining the fastest.

In recent years, people have been experimenting with different ways to cook banana peels, such as creating banana peel "meat" snacks, rum, flour, bread, and tea. Some recipes include banana peel bacon and vegan carnitas. There are even some restaurants and companies creating dishes like "banana skin meat in the bread". It is still a relatively new trend and many have yet to try it.
